My mom asked me to knit her a scarf, and even sent some beautiful yarn to make it out of. I decided I wanted to do something a little different, and designed a scarf knit on the bias. I'm sure there are other patterns out there, but I'd never actually written down a pattern I created, so here it is.

Bias-knit Scarf

Each row either adds a stitch to one side or takes one away from the other - the result is a parallelogram instead of a rectangle, and the box pattern on the interior of the scarf ends up diagonal.

Gauge: 4 sts/in, 5.75 rows/in (I used size 8 needles, YMMV)

Cast on 44 sts.

Right Side (RS): K to last st, K, leaving st on needle, K into back of st (mk1)
Wrong Side (WS): K to last 2 sts, K2tog.

Repeat for 8 rows total.

Begin pattern:

Row 1: K5, K7, P7, K7, P7, K7, K3, mk1 as above.
Row 2: K5, P1, * K7, P7 * until there are 6 sts on needle. K4, K2tog.
Row 3: K5, K6, * P7, K7 * until there are 4 sts on needle. K3, mk1.
Row 4: K5, P2, * K7, P7 * until there are 6 sts on needle. K4, K2tog.
Continue until:
Row 10: K5, P5, * K7, P7 * until there are 6 sts on needle. K4, K2tog.
Row 11: K5, P2, * K7, P7 * until there are 4 sts on needle. K3, mk1.
Row 12: K5, K6, * P7, K7 * until there are 6 sts on needle. K4, K2tog.
Row 13: K5, P1, * K7, P7 * until there are 4 sts on needle. K3, mk1.
Row 14: K5, K7, * P7, K7 * until there are 6 sts on needle. K4, K2tog.
Row 15: K5, K7, * P7, K7 * until there are 4 sts on needle. K3, mk1.

Continue in pattern, making blocks 7 sts wide by 10 rows long until scarf
is desired length, ending on a whole-block border.

Repeat border from beginning:

Row 1: K to last st, mk1.
Row 2: K to last 2 sts, K2tog.

Repeat for 8 rows total.

Bind off, weaving in ends of yarn.

Again, I've never tried writing down a pattern I created, so assume there's probably a few mistakes in there. And if you try it out, let me know.
